Today, we share her insights in this new edition of “A Day in the Life of...”.

What is the first thing you do when you start your workday?

I say good morning, switch on my computer, review priorities, and from there, it is often a surprise! Plans can change on the fly. Otherwise, it would be a bit monotonous, would it not?

What role does communication play in your daily routine?

As in-house legal counsel, we are in touch with almost every department in the company, as well as numerous external stakeholders. Listening carefully to understand the real needs being presented, being able to convey complex issues in simple language, and highlighting the added value our work brings are, in my view, essential aspects of our daily activities.

What is the biggest challenge in your current role?

For me, one of the main challenges right now is integrating new technologies and AI into the processes and workflows of the legal department. I believe we have a tremendous opportunity to make our work much more efficient, which will allow us to support the business at the pace demanded by today’s fast-moving environment.

How do you see the role of the in-house lawyer evolving within a large company?

In my view, the in-house lawyer is becoming an increasingly essential figure within companies. They have a comprehensive understanding of the business, its needs, and capabilities, and they are familiar with internal policies and numerous other matters that enable them to swiftly and securely assess and manage risks, contributing to informed decision-making. Today, I see the role of the in-house lawyer as one of the key members of any team assembled to execute a company project—a true business ally. Additionally, from a governance perspective, the in-house lawyer plays a fundamental role, whether as a member of the management team or even on the Board of Directors.

From the perspective of the in-house legal department, what criteria do you follow when selecting an external lawyer?

We are looking for a true partner—collaborators who feel like part of the team, with all that this entails. We work, face challenges, and celebrate successes together. For me, it is not just about the external firm having the specific technical expertise needed at a given moment; it is absolutely essential that they can put themselves in our shoes, understand our needs, offer practical solutions, and do so at a reasonable cost. We also pay close attention to the composition of their teams and how they interact with each other.

What legal issues do you consider most relevant or of greatest interest to your sector at this time?

On one hand, matters related to corporate governance are crucial, as they directly affect the Board of Directors and the management team. The exposure to risk is growing, requiring a supervisory role for which one must be properly informed and trained, with the in-house lawyer playing a vital part. On the other hand, the new regulation on collective actions is likely to be a significant topic in the coming years, along with everything related to the protection of personal privacy and consumer rights, given the technological revolution we are experiencing.

How has technology transformed the legal sector since you started your professional life?

The transformation has been continuous. I remember when I first started working, many communications were sent by fax, and today, hardly anyone considers using that medium. Process automation, document digitisation, digital signatures, virtual hearings, tools that provide KPIs to identify areas for improvement, intelligent databases, and mobile devices that allow you to work from anywhere are just some examples of how the practice of law has evolved. And of course, there is still much more to come with tools like Chat GPT or generative AI. We are at a point where adapting is more necessary than ever to continue supporting our clients as they adapt to conduct their businesses.

What has been the greatest learning from your current role? And throughout your entire career?

I would say that the greatest learning from my current role, which I have been fortunate to hold for just over six months, is closely related to one of the most important lessons from my entire career: the importance of people and teamwork. The greatest learnings and successes have always come from working alongside talented professionals, some of whom have become close friends. Without them, I am sure I would not be where I am today. I have also learned that the capacity to learn, relearn, be surprised, and evolve is endless if you are willing, and I believe strongly in the importance of staying true to your own values and convictions, which guide my actions every day.

What is the strangest thing that has happened to you in the office or in the profession?

I am not sure if it is unusual, but it was certainly amusing. I remember an occasion, not long after I started working, when my day seemed perfectly planned, but as soon as I arrived at the office, I discovered that some crucial documents for a transaction had not reached their destination. Suddenly, I found myself on a plane to deliver them because the courier services did not fit the schedule. And while it might not be unusual, it is certainly wonderful that throughout my career, I have been fortunate enough to make great friends, both within and outside the legal team, and even beyond the companies or firms where I have worked.
